Sport forms an integral part of life for every Epworth pupil. The skills developed and honed on the sports field contribute positively to a holistic and balanced education.

We embrace mass participation while championing sporting success, ensuring that we accommodate each pupil’s ability and aspiration. Our sports programmes cater equally for beginners, intermediate and advanced athletes.

Balance is key to our sports programmes: balance between developing physical skills, mental skills and enjoyment of the sport; balance between the pressure to win and the challenge of healthy competition; balance between growth as a member of a team and growth as an individual sportswoman; and balance between academic and sports commitments.

We have a core of experienced and highly qualified sports staff, complemented by coaches who are specialists in their disciplines. Our top-class facilities include six all-weather tennis courts; two hockey/cricket/rugby/soccer fields; five netball courts; four glass-backed squash courts; an artificial hockey surface; a ten-lane, 25 m swimming pool and springboard diving facility; a full cross-country course, two multi-purpose indoor centres with basketball, indoor hockey, netball and tennis courts and access to a nearby canoeing facility.

Epworth is renowned for its sporting prowess. We rank amongst the best in South Africa in squash and are recognised as the top canoeing school in the country. Our other sports teams consistently place at the top of regional and provincial leagues. Every year, we celebrate pupils who either represent South Africa or are top SA-ranked sportswomen in their respective sports. We also boast numerous regional and provincial representatives.
