BOARDING
BOARDING AT EPWORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Epworth is a home away from home to approximately half of our pupil body. We offer weekly, termly and overnight boarding to all pupils in Grades 8 to 12. Our aim is to create an environment where every single boarder feels safe, happy and heard.
Our Grade 8 boarders are accommodated together in a single boarding house. The rest of the grades are spread across three other boarding houses. All areas feature comfortable double or single rooms, spacious bathroom facilities and leisure spaces (with television and DVD facilities) for relaxation.
Boarders are cared for on a daily basis by four live-in housemothers and twelve boarder mistresses (usually senior university students). Prefects are also allocated rooms in each house and Grade 12 mentors are strategically placed to look after the junior grades. A head of boarding, who is also an academic staff member, oversees the boarding programme.
Our Big Sister programme provides support and mentorship for our Grade 8 boarders. Every Grade 8 boarder is assigned a Grade 12 boarder who acts as her “big sister” for the year. Various activities are planned throughout the year to encourage this unique partnership.
Wholesome, nutritionally balanced meals are planned and prepared by a professional catering company. Pupils have access to an app whereby they order their lunch and dinner, selecting from three different options. Special dietary needs are accommodated within reason.
Boarders have access to a well-resourced sanitorium that is run by qualified nursing sisters who are on duty 24 hours a day.
Every weekend, boarders can participate in standard outings such as visits to the mall, Youth on Friday and spectating at other schools’ sports events. They can also use all the school’s sports facilities. Longer trips to places like Durban and the Midlands are organised on a regular basis. Boarders also attend socials, festivals, talks and activities at other schools.
