SPORT AT EPWORTH PREPARATORY SCHOOL
In keeping with our holistic educational focus, we offer our pupils diverse sports options so that they can discover their strengths and choices for themselves. Sports staff, teachers and coaches are accomplished at guiding our pupils through a range of sports. They also cater for pupils with varying sporting abilities, from beginners to those with more advanced skills.
We encourage all primary school pupils to engage in sports activities as we believe the skills and values honed on the sports field, such as resilience, commitment and discipline, carry through to academics and other areas of life. We regard sport as an extension of the curriculum rather than an extra-curricular activity.
In most team sports, we focus on fielding multiple teams so that pupils of differing abilities experience and benefit from match play. We participate actively in intra and inter-school competitions and many of our pupils represent Epworth at regional and provincial levels.
Our sport facilities include: six all-weather tennis courts; two hockey/cricket/rugby/soccer fields; five netball courts; four glass-backed squash courts; an artificial hockey surface; a ten-lane, 25 m swimming pool and springboard diving facility; a full cross-country course, two multi-purpose indoor centres with basketball, indoor hockey, netball and tennis courts and access to a nearby canoeing facility.
We offer the following sports: basketball, canoeing, cricket, cross-country, diving, hockey, netball, soccer, squash, swimming, tag rugby and tennis.
Swimming, racquet and ball skills are taught to the Grade R, 1 and 2 pupils in preparation for the other sports. We encourage every pupil, from Grade R to Grade 7, to participate in at least one sporting activity each term.
