On 1 August, with the whole school present, we officially opened our new heated training swimming pool and celebrated our 126th birthday.
Amidst much excitement and fanfare, we prayed a blessing over the pool and asked God to watch over those who swim in it. Pupils, representing our pre-primary, primary and high schools, braved the cold weather to test the waters while the school cheered them on. In true Epworth spirit, we ended the event with some hearty school war cries followed by doughnuts for tea.
Several Epworth families “purchased” starting blocks at the new pool. Thank you to all of them for their generous contributions.
This 25 m and 1.2 m deep pool will enable our swimmers to train throughout the year, even during the cold, winter months. It is part of a bigger project that will eventually see an indoor swimming complex with other sports facilities. Our “old” pool will still be used for galas, diving, and water polo.
“We believe this development will make a significant contribution to ensuring all our pupils are water safe and to strengthening our competitive swimming programme,” said Mr White, Executive Head of Epworth.
