Grade 9s embark on Tshela

As part of the Epworth-on-the-Move programme, the Grade 9s embarked on a two-week journey called Tshela, which is isiXhosa for “crossing”. Not only was it a physical journey of hiking, cycling, canoeing and horseback riding in the Drakensberg, but also a coming-of-age journey, encompassing time for reflection and self-discovery. For every pupil, it was a test of their resilience and perseverance as they braved the elements, sleeping in tents and hiking long distances to achieve their goals. It was also an opportunity for them to bond with each other and to interact outside the classroom in an unfamiliar environment. They returned to great fanfare as pupils, staff and family members were on hand to welcome them back to school.
